Chargers Decimate Lions 34-7 in Hall of Fame Game Blowout

Lions vs. Chargers, which took place in the 2025 Hall of Fame Game on July 31 in Canton, Ohio:

Game Recap

The Los Angeles Chargers dominated the first preseason game and defeated the Detroit Lions by a score of 347.

Trey Lance, the Chargers backup QB, made a 120-yard, 2-touchdown game (13/20), with Justin Herbert resting.

Running back Kimani Vidal gained 37 yards and had two touchdowns on the ground for L.A.

Main Plays & Highlights

Detroit muffed the kickoff and gave the Chargers an early score.

An interception 60-yard run by no-drafted rookie CB Nikko Reed resulted in another score by the Chargers.

They added two more Detroit turnovers: Kyle Allen and Hendon Hooker interceptions. The only scoring drive was a 3-yard TD by Craig Reynolds, the veteran running back of their club.

Impactful Performances

Being an influential force on the defense, Nikko Reed was probably able to secure his place on the roster through his play.

On the WR, Detroit had Dominic Lovett and Isaac TeSlaa who made an impact as the special teams and on offense; on defense, CB Rock Ya-Sin was a veteran with clutch tackles.

Kyle Allen and Hendon Hooker, QB duo, did not fare well, throwing three interceptions, and nowhere presented a strong case to be the backup to Jared Goff.

New Rules & Controversy

NFL recently experimented with an Artificial Intelligence-based virtual measurement system that would be used instead of the chain gang to make first-down calls. It confused or was unwelcome to fans and coaches alike.

There was also a new rule on kickoffs, where touchbacks were to be made at the 35-yard line as a way to promote returns, but the first one, by Detroit returner Grant Stuard was fumbled, not setting the right precedent.

What’s Next?

On August 10, the Saints will be guests at Chargers.

Lions hit the road to take on Atlanta on August 8 in further testing of depth charts in the run up to the regular season.
