Local Celebrations & Events
Walks & Parades:
In Midland, Michigan, the annual Tridge Walk returned to its iconic three-way wooden footbridge, a beloved Labor Day tradition in this community-centric event.
Carolee Mason, retired animal control officer, was the grand marshal and there were marching bands, floats, and vintage cars at the 63rd annual "Pets on Parade" Labor Day parade in Newtown, Connecticut.
Strikes & Labor Activism
Houston, Texas, Hilton Americas-Houston hotel workers filed a nine-day strike demanding better wages (they're seeking $23/hour), better food in the cafeteria, better safety, and better leave policies. Union leaders expressed the strike's importance for labor standards in the face of rising living costs.
Peaceful protests erupted across the country, and the Women of Michigan Action Network (WOMAN) in Midland, Michigan, staged a "Workers Over Billionaires" march, which began at the county courthouse and marched along M-20, demanding worker interests be a priority for political leaders.
Nature & Weather: Auroral Show
In the wake of a high-powered solar storm, an aurora show of a kind that is rarely seen and scantily bright was expected for areas of the northern U.S. (including portions of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Dakotas, Montana and Washington) and possibly as far south as New England, Iowa, or Oregon, weather and space agencies said. The event should round out Labor Day weekend with a gorgeous sky show, although precise visibility will depend on cloud cover and local conditions.
