Live update of the tsunami warning: More than 900,000 people were evacuated in Japan, and more than 280,000 residents were evacuated in China due to the increased coastal risk caused by Cyclone Co-May.

Here are the latest live tsunami updates based on verified sources:

M ~8.8 Earthquake off Kamchatka Peninsula Group II Aftershock (Leap-Frog Sequence) 1. Tsunami height = (0.9 to 4.5) m (Bassett) Height = (0.9 to 4.5) m (Mattioli)

The magnitude 8.8 earthquake happened in the wee hours of July 30, 2025 UTC (very late on July 29 in the U.S.) off the eastern Kamchatka Peninsula of Russia, at a shallow depth (~19km), causing tsunami warnings along the Pacific.

It is said to be the most powerful earthquake ever in the region since 1952 and one of the strongest in the world in past years.

Technical Observations and Affected Regions Waves

Russia (Kuril Islands, Kamchatka): Evacuations were taking place; coastal flooding had been reported in, among other places, Severo-Kurilsk; structural damage had been recorded such as to buildings and a nursery.

Japan (Hokkaido & Pacific coast): First tsunami of 30-40 cm, and 900,000+ displaced persons in over 130 municipalities. Officials advised of 3m waves that could hit areas of eastern coast, and alerted Tokyo Bay and Osaka Bay.

Alaska & Hawaii:

Hawaii was on alert of a state of emergency; first waves would come in at about 7pm local time with a potential maximum of 3m. It encouraged people to leave the coastal areas as soon as possible.

The Aleutian Islands region of Alaska is also under alert; the arrival times of the hurricane are anticipated later in the afternoon of the local time.

United States West Coast (California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia)

The region was initially put under Tsunami Watch but most of the regions have now been elevated to a Tsunami Advisory and a Warning has been issued on Northern California (Cape Mendocino to the Oregon border).

Crescent City is an exceptionally high-hazard location, where predicted waves are 3 5 feet (30 150 cm); however, other destinations will experience mostly waves below 1 foot (30 cm) but currents will be dangerous.

ETA:

Crescent City Approx. 11.50 p.m PT

San Francisco Area ~12:15 am to 12:40 am PT, and it may take many hours.

Local governments are urgently encouraging people to avoid beaches, piers, and marinas until the danger has passed.

Other Regions Affected

Latin America & Pacific Islands:

Waves of 0.5 to 20 cm or so are anticipated in most locations, but alerts have been issued in Mexico, Peru (entire coast), Ecuador (including Galapagos), Chile, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala.

Philippines and Indonesia: Smaller tsunamis (less than 1 m) have been warned by the official advisories and are expected to arrive in Philippines between 13:20-14:40 local time and in Indonesia by less than 0.5m.

China: The coast of the east warned about potential waves up to 0.3-1m.

Status and Recommendations as of Now

Japan Meteorological Agency warned that the danger of tsunami may last more than 24 hours, and there may be a series of powerful waves after the first ones.

Indian Ocean / India: INCOIS early warning center has clarified that no tsunami has been observed to threaten India or Indian Ocean regions due to this earthquake activity.

Bottom Line

A strong 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Kamchatka Peninsula has sparked a large number of tsunami warnings in the North Pacific. Russia and Japan have already been affected by the waves and many countries that are on alert include Hawaii, U.S. West Coast, Alaska, Canada, some Latin American countries and Asia-Pacific. The majority of the regions will experience minor waves and heavy currents, and some regions, such as Northern California, and Hokkaido, might experience bigger waves and require evacuation. There is a threat that lasts longer than a day in certain areas, so remain alert and follow the official recommendations.
